A Typical Day in Prep

08.30 – 08.45: Children arrive at school and are greeted by staff from the Prep team before meeting with their friends in the playground for a short play outside.  They then head into classrooms when the bell rings.

08.55: The school day begins with registration with the class teacher.  This gives the children a chance to find out about what is happening on that day and to settle into their classrooms.

Prep assemblies take place on Mondays and Wednesdays.  There is also a whole school assembly on Fridays and singing practice on Tuesdays.

Lessons and activities begin, often with a 20-minute Phonics lesson, followed by a longer lesson with an English or Maths focus.  For the youngest pupils, the learning is largely play-based.  Children develop skills and concepts within a carefully planned and engaging learning environment in which they access resources and activities independently.  Adults work with small groups of children to focus on particular learning intentions.

In Reception, subject areas are taken from the Early Years framework and are integrated through the continuous provision.  Areas of learning are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

In Years 1 and 2 subjects covered include English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Religious Education, PE, Games PSHE, French, Computing and Music.  As the children progress through the Prep Department, more of their lessons are taught as a whole class and some, for example, French and Music are taught by specialist teachers in the school.

10.40: It is break time and the children have a chance to recharge with a snack and a drink, some fresh air and time to play with friends.

11.00: The children have another learning session before lunch.

12.00: Prep children make their way to the Dining Hall for lunch, during which time they have a wide choice from the menu which is cooked on site. We encourage good table manners and view this as a social time. Lunchtime is also a great opportunity for the children to take part in a number of clubs such as gardening, skipping, construction, library and art.

13.25: The children have their final lessons of the day with a short break at 2.25pm.

15.30: They finish the day and all the children gather their belongings and get ready to be picked up by their parents.

After School Club is available for pupils until 17.30 and Prep children also take part in a number of after school activity clubs including Andy Tucker Football and Dance.

All Prep children are asked to read with their parents every evening and Year 1 and Year 2 children have spellings to practise each day.
