Junior Learning Support

The Learning Support Department at Richard Pate provides a bespoke package that is unique and tailored to the individual needs of the child. Children all learn at different rates and on their journey through education they might need extra help at particular times to make this as enjoyable and successful as possible.

We promote early identification and assistance with any barriers presenting to learning in school. Teachers or parents can raise concerns at any time about a child. We consider good communication with parents as the best tool to encourage joined up support between home and school which is the most effective way of helping the children. If a concern is raised, observations and assessments can be carried out by the SENDCo and suggestions for support are made.

Our SENDCo works closely with class and specialist teachers to provide strategies and resources in class to assist with specific needs. Small group work out of the class is also provided by teaching assistants to target specific skills. Additionally, one to one support from the SENDCo is also available where deemed appropriate to the child’s needs.

Where external assessment is needed, the department can guide parents through the process and recommend practitioners in different areas of need. We strongly advise having a talk with our SENDCo before commissioning an assessment to help inform your decision.  This could be in the areas of dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language, Neurodiversity or specific learning difficulties. External practitioners can visit the school and provide recommendations to inform support plans, should one be deemed necessary.

We pride ourselves in setting challenging but achievable personal targets for all children, regardless of their individual learning profiles. We encourage them to understand their learning needs and how to support themselves to become independent learners in order to achieve their best outcomes and develop their self-esteem to thrive at our school.
